Everything started more than 10 years ago, when Eberhard for the first time went to Myanmar to treat ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) patients and teach ear surgery. Since then, we have been back every year and friendships developed. The visits came to a hold with the military coup in the country in 2021. Eberhard and Marlene then founded Carematters: We then started meeting online to talk about ENT cases. Half a year later, physicians from other conflict countries started joining.
Eberhard is a passionate ENT surgeon who is especially interested in middle ear surgery and has published widely on tinnitus. He was one of the first who implanted the active middle ear implant Vibrant Sound Bridge in 1998 (at this time manufactured by “Symphonix”, now Med-EL®). As attending surgeon at the University hospital of Tuebingen in the ENT department, he worked closely with Professor Plester and Professor Zenner over 11 years.
Marlene trained in Switzerland (Aarau and Basel) and is working in Rhinology at Charing Cross Hospital in London.
Her main interest is rhinology and facial plastics. Over the last years she has worked closely with a research group in the United States/Austria focusing on rhinology and looking more closely at the quality of life of chronic rhinosinusitis patients.
She is also part of the Executive Committee of the European Rhinologic Society (ERS), Chair of the Educational Committee of the ERS, member of the scientific committee of the ERS and part of the rhinology team of the Y-CEORL.

Sophia is a consultant working in the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf. Her focus is otology and pediatric ENT and she has published several studies in internationally well-respected journals in these fields. She has studied medicine in Munich and has worked at the Charité Berlin for 7 years during her residency and as a senior physician. Since two years, she is also in charge of lecturing students and coordinating medical studies. At the moment, she is doing a fellowship in paediatric ENT in Auckland/New Zealand.
Martina is an anaesthesiology consultant based in Munich, Germany, where she has studied and is working until today. She has been travelling and working with Plastic and ENT surgeons since 2003, travelling together to Myanmar, Yemen, China and Iran. Martina has a great passion for her young patients.
